NICOLAS JASMIN

Nicolas Jasmin's works are self-referential and full of references. They are simultaneously transparent and opaque, of conceptual rigour and enigmatic playfulness. Hand meets machine, painterly gesture meets linear laser beam, rough materiality meets smoothed surface, addition meets subtraction. This constant oscillation between opposites also corresponds to the motifs that Jasmin uses in mostly extensive groups of works: He favours bringing geometric forms and monochrome surfaces, figure and ground, image and text into a mutually dependent relationship.* For RFDINSEL, Nicolas Jasmin will be showing his new group of Track List Paintings in Innsbruck entitled A portrait of an Austrian artist, the W.O. cycle, 2020-2023, which refers to the late Tyrolean artist Walter Obholzer. Another group of works on show is a selection from Jasmin's Adler cycle, in which he uses writing as a form, as in the Track List Paintings. He paints the indexed names of the colours, which he selects from the ADLER-Werk Lackfabrik colour palette. The surface of the painted picture is treated with a laser beam in such a way that one half is subtracted by the light of the laser and a transformed colour is created, a non-colour. Through the same process, the letters emerge from the painted layers of the picture. For this exhibition, Nicolas Jasmin has developed a room-specific group of wall paintings from this Adler cycle and is showing them in combination with older and more recent works.
