Easter Festival Tyrol - J.S.Bach Johannes Passion, BWV 245

The St. John Passion is the first of BACH's two surviving Passions and was first performed on Good Friday in the St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig in 1724. It is a true marvel of Western church music and occupies a special position. Hardly any other work has survived in so many different versions, and BACH made changes for each performance. The Passion begins with the incredibly stirring opening chorus, which leads to the Garden of Gethsemane for Jesus' imprisonment, and ends with his entombment. One of the most important pioneers of early music, Philippe Herreweghe has been involved with BACH since his musical beginnings, having already internalised his music at the age of 22. It is still difficult to get to the heart of a BACH work [...] ingenious, mysterious pieces: Works of art that transcend every time and social framework. You can study them all your life, there is no final answer.
