Panel discussion: Equal opportunities - still an illusion?

National education reports, as well as international surveys, repeatedly show that children from economically weaker or even poverty-stricken backgrounds only have limited access to higher education or good vocational training. One reason for this is the increasing social inequality and the limited financial means of many families to provide their children with a good education. A situation that has been exacerbated by the coronavirus crisis. However, educational institutions - be it secondary schools or universities - are also characterized by specific cultures that have an excluding effect on those who have not always been at home in them. While women have succeeded in advancingdring into secondary schools and universities, albeit not to the same extent into the well-paid and more secure positions of the academic world, people from working class or migrant backgrounds are still a minority at universities.

In the discussion, we would like to address findings from educational research and poverty research, but also highlight perspectives and starting points for change.
