How does ChatGPT "think"? Encounters with an artificial intelligence

Have you ever wondered who or what this ChatGPT is that everyone is talking about? The language model that can exchange arguments with us, create texts for us and provide us with ideas, but fails at complex arithmetic tasks, for example. This technology falls under the term artificial intelligence (AI) and we would like to introduce it to you as part of our DiSCussion lecture series.
This event is about the basics of language models, their possibilities and limitations. Prof. Justus Piater, head of the Digital Science Center (DiSC) and professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, will first explain how ChatGPT works: What can ChatGPT do and what not? Afterwards, Assistant Professor Dr. Brigitte Rath from the Institute of Comparative Literature will explain the effects of ChatGPT responding to our input and what the implications are for the concept of authorship: How do we position ourselves in conversation with a machine?
Finally, we would like to get into conversation with you. We want to discuss with you your own experiences with language models. We would like to reflect with you on different types of encounters in which ChatGPT manifests itself differently. Of course, there will also be ample opportunity to ask questions.
The Digital Science Center (DiSC) was founded at the beginning of 2019 with the aim of advancing the digitalization of science and taking new research directions. The DiSCussion lecture series was created to promote dialog between science and society. It is currently dedicated to the main topic of AI and is co-organized by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Digitalization and Sustainability.
Save the date!
The DiSCussion lecture series on the key topic of AI will continue in spring and summer 2024. The next event on ethical and legal aspects will take place on 11.01.2024.
