3rd Symphony Concert

In the Beethoven Year 2027—200 years after the composer’s death—this season’s concert program will feature several of his works that impressively reflect his musical development.
Beethoven’s only violin concerto broke with the conventions of its time. Instead of virtuosic self-display, it unfolds as a grand symphonic journey in which the solo instrument initially takes a back seat—for example, in the expansive first movement with its tranquil mood and the later lyrical highlights of the solo part. Thus Beethoven created a work that stands between the concerto and the symphony and at the same time became a milestone of the genre. A few decades later, Robert Schumann stepped onto the grand stage of symphonic music shaped by Beethoven. The 30-year-old sketched his “First” in 1841 in just four days, shortly after his marriage to Clara Wieck, driven by a “springtime urge” that inspired him to new creative expression. With his debut work in this genre, Schumann did not merely make a cautious foray, but rather a self-assured departure into a tradition still dominated by Beethoven.
The soloist is Ukrainian-born Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman, who is particularly esteemed for his nuanced interpretations of Beethoven. At the podium, the TSOI welcomes Israeli conductor and trained violinist Daniel Cohen, who has served as General Music Director of the Staatstheater Darmstadt since 2018.
