After work showing of the exhibition ‘Stones between the fronts’

Numerous schools, markets, and municipal offices; large public administrative and cultural buildings; as well as a wide range of projects for private clients—all of these are part of the impressive yet virtually unknown body of work in Europe that Ehrentraut Katstaller-Schott (1924–2024) and Karl Katstaller (1921–1989) realized throughout El Salvador. The two architects, who had met in Vienna in Lois Welzenbacher’s master class, responded to a call from the Salvadoran government in 1952 and became, in the years that followed, key figures in the architectural modernism of the Central American country.
The exhibition at aut comprehensively documents the life and work of the architectural couple for the first time, traces their journey from European modernism to Central American “modernismo tropicalizado,” and highlights the work of Ehrentraut Katstaller-Schott as a pioneer of women’s architectural practice in El Salvador.
