Benefit concert by the Innsbruck University Orchestra with Round Table 18

In the summer semester of 2025, Claudio Büchler will be celebrating his 20th anniversary as musical director of the Innsbruck University Orchestra. He has selected a very special programme for his anniversary concert on Saturday, 14 June 2025, at 8 pm at Congress Innsbruck: The concert will be opened by the brass players, who will play an arrangement of William Byrd's suite ‘The Battell’, a work that was originally written for a kind of small harpsichord, the virginal, but whose combative character comes into its own particularly well in this arrangement. The orchestra will then accompany Agnieszka Kulowska in Tchaikovsky's famous violin concerto. Tchaikovsky wrote the concerto after a major emotional crisis in just a few weeks during a stay at a spa on Lake Geneva. Although it met with very mixed reactions at its première Although it provoked very mixed reactions at its premiere and was sometimes strongly rejected, today it is one of the most frequently performed violin concertos in the world. In contrast, Johannes Brahms' 1st Symphony, which is heard in the second part of the concert, was written after a long artistic struggle. Brahms worked on his First Symphony for twenty years, as he had Beethoven's symphonies in mind as overpowering role models. After the première After the symphony's premiere in 1876, however, it was immediately labelled ‘Beethoven's 10th symphony’ and today it is said that Brahms created the possibility of ‘writing symphonies even after Beethoven’. With this concert, the Innsbruck University Orchestra would like to thank Claudio Büchler for his tireless commitment, his musical understanding and especially for making the orchestra what it is today.
