Carmen
Her name has become synonymous with fiery temperament, southern passion, and an unyielding thirst for freedom: With *Carmen* , we present one of the most beloved operas in the repertoire, a work that has lost none of its raw intensity to this day.
While the “Bohemian” Carmen uncompromisingly stands up for her self-determination, the simple soldier Don José’s desire escalates into a murderous obsession. Electrified by Carmen’s charisma, he falls increasingly under her spell, deserts, and gives up everything to follow her—only to kill her in the end, driven by possessiveness and the fear of losing control.
While the libretto sharpens the dramatic fall of the characters, Bizet’s score unfolds a dazzling richness of expression between Eros and the abyss, between lightness and existential crisis. The music shifts subtly between genres and styles, thereby developing its captivating pull. The Paris premiere in 1875 provoked a scandal before the opera became a legend and began its triumphant march across the stages of the world.
Armin Petras, director and designated artistic director of Theater Bremen, makes his debut at the Tiroler Landestheater with this work, which tells of a death-defying courage and a burning will to live, an unconditional thirst for freedom, and sexual self-determination. His production portrays Carmen as a champion of freedom who refuses to submit to the constraints of a restrictive society and, precisely because of this, exudes an irresistible allure. Carmen becomes a symbol of the promise of liberation—and a mirror of a world that cannot cope with this freedom.
