"Back then, my name was Rita" With contemporary witness and Holocaust survivor Rozette Kats

Rozette Kats was born on May 27, 1942, in Amsterdam to a Jewish family. In light of Nazi persecution, she was placed in the care of a Dutch couple at the age of eight months, who named her "Rita." Her parents were deported to Auschwitz with Rozette's brother, who was still an infant, and murdered there. Rozette learned of her parents' fate and her real name in May 1948, shortly before her sixth birthday.
Since the 1990s, Rozette Kats has been appearing in Dutch and German schools as a Holocaust survivor. On January 27, 2023, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, she spoke at the German Bundestag's memorial service. On May 20, 2026, she will be a guest in Austria for the first time.
