ECHOES FROM THE TIAN SHAN - Eventcinema

In the summer of 1902, Russian botanist Dr. Vasilii Sapozhnikov and German geographer Dr. Max Friederichsen left their university offices to embark on an expedition through Kyrgyzstan and to explore the Tian Shan, one of the world’s largest and highest mountain ranges.

They carried with them heavy photographic equipment to capture and map the so-called “Heavenly Mountains.”
122 summers later, a Russian-German-Kyrgyz team sets out on a new expedition to retrace their steps and, using the old maps and photographs, investigate how the landscape has changed over the past century.

In search of the rivers and glaciers photographed more than 100 years ago, the team must journey deep into remote mountain valleys. As they attempt to locate and precisely recreate the 1902 images, they also reflect on the emotional and human perception of this extraordinary landscape.

Alongside the documentary film, original props and the historical photographs from 1902 will be on display for personal interpretation, accompanied by tasty regional cuisine.
After the screening, there will be an opportunity for dialogue with expedition leader Martin Kaiser, filmmaker Patrick Barylla, and members of the expedition team about the journey and the film’s creation.

The evening concludes with a panel discussion centered around the key question:
“Between Flight Shame and Cultural Exchange – Can New Expedition Models Transform Travel Tourism Sustainably?”
