FRANZ KRAUTGASSER

Franz Krautgasser (1920-1985) belongs to the generation of great Tyrolean post-war painters who had such a decisive influence on the new beginning of painting after 1945. Initially still rooted in academic traditions, Krautgasser quickly moved towards a new and colourful form of expressionism. Influenced by the French Expressionists and the “Ecole de Paris”, the artist increasingly turned to abstraction and reduction of formal means in the early 1950s. He created graphic works in oil, ink or lacquer, monochrome monotypes, as well as abstract and figural compositions characterised by strong colours. Due to illness, Krautgasser was forced to end this intense creative period in the early 1960s. We are showing a beautiful selection of works from his estate that document his development over this 10-year period and illustrate Krautgasser's unique artistic position.
