Gender and diversity aspects in pediatric hematology/oncology

Prof. Roman Crazzolara
Professor of Pediatric Oncology, University Clinic for Pediatrics I, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria
Gender and diversity influence the incidence, course, side effects, and long-term consequences of hematological and oncological diseases in children and adolescents—but are still too rarely taken into account consistently. Acute leukemias and some lymphomas occur more frequently in boys, while thyroid carcinomas, for example, are significantly more prevalent in girls/adolescents, with differences in toxicity, fertility, and psychosocial coping. The presentation will address these findings using concrete examples and discuss how a gender- and diversity-sensitive perspective can sharpen therapy and survivorship care.
