HDM in Concert: Michael Schöch and Stimmsalz
The Stimmsalz choir from Hall in Tirol currently consists of nearly 35 singers from Hall and the surrounding area. Under the direction of Maria Luise Senn-Drewes, the choir has developed challenging programs spanning a wide variety of genres. The political song “El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido! ” (The united people will never be defeated) was written in Chile in 1973 as a symbol of resistance against the Pinochet regime and quickly became one of South America’s most famous political songs. The idea for this program emerged from Frederic Rzewski’s brilliant and stirring setting of this song as a grand variation work for piano, which you will hear in the second part of the concert. Resistance in Hanns Eisler’s setting of Bertolt Brecht’s text “Against the War” is contrasted with Georg Kreislers’ “Why.” A voice is given, as it were, to the women of Iran, as well as to the Catalan uprising and the slaves in America. Political and socially critical songs, ranging from Joni Mitchell to the Tyrolean dialect group Findling, are meant to touch and move you. The catchy and inspiring original song, which you can sing along to, will not be missing! “De pie, cantar” – Rise up, sing!
