At the White Horse Inn

“When it really rains here, it pours…” Where exactly? Why, at Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut, of course, where the energetic landlady Josepha runs a prestigious guesthouse. In high season, everyone and their mother gathers here—factory owners from Berlin, beautiful women from Sigismund, clever young ladies from good families—and even the old Emperor Franz Joseph is said to have been spotted. It goes without saying that a few romances flare up and fizzle out in this colorful crowd. But before all the couples have finally paired off according to their whims and even the waiter Leopold can rejoice at his dismissal, things get pretty chaotic. As in any good operetta, there’s only one thing that helps: bring on the champagne!

Austrian singer, actress, and director Ruth Brauer-Kvam makes her directorial debut at the Tyrolean State Theater with Ralph Benatzky’s hit operetta from 1930, and with plenty of imagination, vitality, and a healthy dose of humor, she has a brilliant ensemble of vacation-drunk hotel guests dancing across the stage. Whether waltz, love song, or polka, the best part is: ladies’ choice!
