Jazz at the HDM: Fred Hersch

Fred Hersch is one of the defining figures of contemporary jazz. For more than three decades, the multi-award-winning pianist, composer, and bandleader has been influencing the international scene with his distinctive style, artistic vision, and extraordinary musical depth.

With around fifty releases and 17 Grammy nominations, Hersch is one of the most significant voices in his genre. Honors such as the Doris Duke Artist Award (2016) and three “Jazz Pianist of the Year” awards underscore his stature. The New Yorker has called him a “living legend.”

Hersch impresses with his wide artistic range—from solo concerts and duo projects to his acclaimed trio and innovative chamber music formats. As a composer, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.

His recent releases include Live in Europe and the 2024 solo album Silent, Listening (ECM). His memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly, also offers personal insights into his work.
