Jazz at the HDM: Pirchner – A Half-Double Album

In 1973, Werner Pirchner—arguably the most significant and unconventional Tyrolean composer of the 20th century—released his first LP: *Ein halbes Doppelalbum*. It was a bombshell that provocatively tore down the boundaries between serious and popular music, between Alpine tradition and avant-garde jazz. 

This music has never been performed in concert in its original form—the material seemed too unique, too intimate, and too closely tied to Pirchner’s own interpretation. Yet the relevance of his lyrics remains undiminished, and the musical substance continues to pose an enticing challenge for the present day. 

The Jazz Orchester Tirol has made it its mission to view this legendary work not as a rigid monument, but as a living starting point for a musical journey. In new arrangements, Pirchner’s spirit is evoked without merely copying him. It is an attempt to musically pick up where Pirchner left off in 1973: with music that is equally intelligent, humorous, critical, and deeply rooted.
