LASKARINES - contemporary dance

A dance performance about inner struggles, dreams and boundaries, combining traditional Greek dances with the aesthetics of video games to create a choreography of dynamic steps, jumps and formations.
In LASKARINES, three contemporary dancers embody the emotionality of an inner struggle: the struggle for self-realisation. Between their own dreams, social expectations and the unpredictability of life, a balancing act emerges that never quite succeeds. The performance moves through determination, joy and contentment to stress, anger and exhaustion. Where are the limits of our inner struggles? And when does the pursuit of a dream become a burden?
The title LASKARINES refers to Laskarina Bouboulina, an important fighter in the Greek Revolution of 1821, who was exiled due to political conflicts and ultimately lost her life in a family dispute. Would Laskarina make the same decisions today as she did then?
Choreographer Ms. Vasiliki Bara draws on her Greek heritage and contemporary media to create something new on stage. For the choreographic material, she combines traditional Greek men's dances with the aesthetics of video games – two seemingly contrasting worlds in which struggle nevertheless takes centre stage. Together with the dancers, she develops a choreography of dynamic steps, jumps and formations. The performance is accompanied by newly composed electroacoustic pieces by Konstantinos Baras.
