Leopold Stastny - survivor of Nazi terror, coaching legend & inventor of the S
As coach, Leopold Stastny (Slovakian spelling Šťastný) led FC Wacker Innsbruck to the top of the National League from the fall of 1965. With his expertise as team manager of the national team (1968-1975), he laid the foundations for later successes in Austrian soccer. in 1975, he invented the school leagues, the 50th anniversary of which will be celebrated in 2025. Stastny was a star as a player and coach in his home city of Bratislava from the 1930s onwards. What is still almost unknown in Austria is the fact that, as a Jew, he was very lucky to survive the Nazi era.
The exhibition designed by the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava has now been re-curated in collaboration with Fairplay Prevention, the Innsbruck City Archive/Museum and the Innsbruck Fan Initiative. It tells Leopold Stastny's eventful story between Bratislava, Innsbruck, Vienna and Canada. It has been expanded to include panels on Tyrolean soccer, in particular the ideological conflicts of the interwar period and Stastny's time in Innsbruck and as team manager. Excerpts from contemporary television reports about Stastny and current interviews with companions can be accessed via QR codes.
