By Design, By Chance – Creating Typefaces with Openness and Attitude
Typography is a discipline steeped in tradition, much of which dates back centuries. Anyone who designs typefaces must grapple with this—should they follow the conventions, play with them, bend them, or even break them?
Chris Campe spent a long time trying to do everything “right.” She has published several books on type design and taught its principles in numerous workshops. But eventually she realized: design only becomes interesting when “right” is no longer a criterion.
In this talk, Chris Campe explains why openness to serendipity in design is just as important as expertise. She shares why she specialized in type after studying illustration, what experimental lettering has to do with gender norms, and how she became a protest sign influencer.
