Lecture series - Rethinking boundaries: ice swimming meets disabled sports

Mag. Daringer
Ice swimming record holder, founder of AQUA and ICE, President of the Tyrolean Disabled Sports Association, Innsbruck, Austria
In this lecture, Gerald Daringer provides an impressive insight into the world of extreme sports and draws unexpected but profound parallels with disabled sports. He explains how people cross mental and physical boundaries in ice-cold water (e.g. an ice mile at 0.4 °C for 28 minutes) - and how this experience offers insights for people who are finding their way after unpredictable life changes. Aspects such as pain processing, cardiovascular adaptation, neuropsychological mechanisms and motivationally effective strategies will be highlighted and it will be shown how people can overcome apparent limits with willpower, discipline and mental strength. The lecture offers new perspectives on motivation, resilience and the importance of challenge for healing, identity and meaning in life - both in elite sport and in medical rehabilitation.
