Lecture series - From the disability movement to disability studies

Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Lisa Pfahl
Professor of Educational Science, Disability Studies & Inclusive Education
Institute of Educational Sciences, University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria
Disability Studies has its origins in emancipatory disability movements that fought against paternalism and discrimination. In alliance with the social sciences, the social model of disability based on conflict theory was developed, which distinguishes impairment from disability and thus enables an analysis of the social construction of disability. As pioneers of the paradigm shift in disability policy from care to participation, disability studies also demand a change of perspective in research. People with disabilities are not seen as objects of research, but as subjects of the right to self-determination. This human rights approach goes hand in hand with conflicts about their freedom and dignity, which will be discussed in the lecture.
