The folk cantata Santa María de Iquique was written by Chilean composer Luis Advis and premiered by the Quilapayún ensemble in 1970.
The cantata depicts the events in the northern Chilean city of Iquique, where hundreds of saltpetre workers and their families sought refuge in the Santa María school after fighting for better working conditions. They were brutally repressed by the government at the time. As a result, hundreds of workers and their families were murdered.
The Cantata Santa María de Iquique is considered the highlight of the "Nueva Canción Chilena" movement, in which elements of classical music merge with the folk tradition of northern Chile. At the same time, it is a tragic foreshadowing of the events that were to follow the establishment of the Chilean dictatorship in 1973.
Grupo Santiago presents the Cantata Santa María with German narration to commemorate the victims of repression and armed conflict worldwide.
