Subvocal
Subvocal is a new hypnotic performance by Aapo Nikkanen and Raudie McLeod. It uses hypnosis and experimental sound design to create what the artists describe as an ‘opera for the mind.’ There is no physical stage set and no visible cast in the performance: all elements of the stage emerge as unique constructions in the unconscious of each individual audience member. The audience is hypnotised and guided through an unconscious labyrinth that questions the limits of individual agency in a digitally mediated world.
Subvocal is the second part of a trilogy of performances that use hypnosis to explore speculative futures and the socio-political implications of new technologies. The work views the unconscious not as a neutral space, but as contested terrain: a zone where neoliberal exploitation, influence and psychological operations coexist alongside the potential for emancipation and agency.
