Words & Music: Fanis. A live radio play

How did the world come into being? How do societies emerge? These fundamental questions form the basis of the folklore surrounding the “Women of Fanis,” which South Tyrolean author Anita Pichler explored many years ago together with folklore scholar Ulrike Kindl. From the fragments of centuries-old traditions, she has woven thirteen portraits of sometimes enigmatic female figures in whose hands lies the fate of Fanis. Fanis is a vast high alpine pasture in the Dolomites. It is there that the Ladins have projected their timeless myth. Author and actress Ursula Scheidle and Florian Kmet have set out on a journey back to the mountains from which they themselves set out many years ago, searching for traces of these sometimes highly abstract images that underlie the tales of Fanis. In their live performance, the two bring the myth back to life. They allow language to interact with sound, thereby expanding the characters’ scope of action. (Florian Kmet)
