Gender and diversity in anatomy

Prof. Marko Konschake
Director of the Institute for Clinical Functional Anatomy, Specialist in Anatomy, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria
The analysis of sex, gender, and diversity in anatomical education makes it clear that better representation of different biological and social genders and body types is necessary. Such diversity in medical-anatomical teaching helps to break down existing prejudices and creates a more inclusive learning environment. In terms of anatomy, this means that teaching materials and models should not only show a "standard body," but also reflect the diversity of people. By using different anatomical models and teaching methods, students are specifically prepared to recognize and take into account individual differences between patients. Ultimately, this contributes to better personalized medical care in the healthcare system.
