Whimsical silent film music is at the heart of the concert by konsTellation plus: Martin Smolka has set the hour-long film Die Puppe (1919) by German director Ernst Lubitsch to music. The film pokes fun at both the aristocracy and the church and tells the story of a marriage scam of a different kind: Lancelot, nephew of Baron de Chanterelle, fakes a marriage to a doll maker's creation so that his uncle can die peacefully, knowing that his line will continue – until Lancelot realizes that he himself has been tricked: the bride at his side is not a doll, but real. And suddenly there are feelings! Martin Smolka's approach musically underscores the cheerful mood and ironic details of the film. His soundtrack mixes tools of new music such as microtones and timbre effects with loops and tonality, with minuet shifts and a Tchaikovsky quote. The music is fast-paced, entertaining, and playful, just like the film. Also on the program: A weather-sensitive crescendo – Black Rain by Daniele Ghisi in its Austrian premiere with Juliet Fraser as soprano, and a work for string orchestra and tape by Sara Glojnarić, one of the most sought-after young composers today. Konstellation plus is part of the Klangspuren Future Lab in cooperation with the Tyrolean State Conservatory to promote talented performers of contemporary music.
