Knowledge creates health: Rare diseases are not so rare

A disease is considered rare if it affects no more than one in 2,000 people. Between 6,000 and 8,000 different rare diseases are known worldwide. They are usually serious, often affect multiple organ systems, can cause permanent disabilities, and, if left untreated, are often associated with reduced life expectancy. Most have genetic causes. Around 450,000 people are affected in Austria.
A rare disease should be considered in cases of chronic, unusual symptoms of unclear cause or if several family members are affected. Early detection is important to enable diagnosis and, if necessary, therapy and support. The aim is to provide care as close to home as possible.
In her presentation, Daniela Karall explains what those affected need, what challenges rare diseases bring with them, and how those affected, relatives, caregivers, doctors, insurance companies, and scientists can work together to contribute to progress and quality of life.
The presentation will be translated into Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS)!
Livestream available.
