KLANGSPUREN – 40 years KLANGFORUM WIEN

7:15 p.m., Introduction: Gunter Schneider in conversation with Johannes Maria Staud

Programme: Johannes Maria Staud Die schöne Müllerin / These Fevered Days Instrumentation of Schubert's song cycle with seven new songs based on Emily Dickinson for tenor and ensemble (2024), Austrian premiere, 95'

Performers: Klangforum Wien: Christoph Prégardien, tenor | Elena Schwarz, conductor

The themes of nature and love characterise Johannes Maria Staud's contribution to the 40th anniversary of Klangforum Wien. Inspired by Franz Schubert's ‘Schöne Müllerin’, he brings its melodic and inventive power into the present day without sounding nostalgic. The programme is complemented by seven Staud settings of Emily Dickinson poems. Dickinson, who lived at around the same time as Schubert/Müller, also addresses the themes of nature and love, but her poetry reflects female self-determination and an experimental style – a stark contrast to the projection-laden female role in Schubert/Müller. In his work, Staud finds surprising connections between Schubert's world and Dickinson's thoughts – tenderly, just as the poet would have wished.
