Contemporary Armenian Art

Armenia – although a country with a long and exciting culture and history*) – is rarely or hardly mentioned in the Western media. When it is, it is usually only in connection with the still unresolved issue of Armenia's territorial integrity, the conflict with Azerbaijan that has been ongoing for more than 30 years.

It is therefore all the more pleasing when the Innsbruck Gallery Nothburga offers insights into contemporary artistic creation and thus into the entire culture of present-day Armenia in spring 2025 (May 27 to June 14). 18 artists (mostly printmakers, but also some painters and photographers) provide a glimpse into a foreign yet not entirely unfamiliar world. The themes range from landscapes, figurative works, portraits, and socially critical representations to the abstract and fantastic. Most of the artists are young graduates of the Yerevan Art University, who are still largely at the beginning of their artistic careers. Technically trained to a high standard, they demonstrate, despite the relative political and economic isolation of the country, that the new generation of artists in Armenia is open to the world and internationally connected.
